Glad you found us! My name is Chris Emery. I’ve been paddling for over 30 years — can it really be that long?

Me on a recent whitewater trip with some old paddling friends in West Virginia.

Paddling 101 is a place for me to share my enthusiasm and hard-won knowledge about all things paddling.

After years snowboarding and skateboarding, I began whitewater kayaking in my early 20s and quickly became obsessed.

For many years, I spent all my free time kayaking progressively more challenging rivers. I’ve paddled numerous rivers in the United States, Canada, and other countries.

In recent years, I moved to San Diego, California. It’s not a whitewater paddling destination, but there is plenty of water to play in. In California, I’ve taken up stand-up paddling boarding and explore the bays and oceans in kayaks and canoes.

I’ve also pushed my family afloat over the years. My wife Monica and I have kayaked many rivers together and now we’re getting my son, Kai on the water.

My sincere hope is that the information you find on this site will help you too get out on the water and have many adventures.

See you on the water, Chris
